Some people move to a new home to make their commute to work easier. But if you work from a home office, your commute remains more-or-less the same, as in, the amount of time it takes you to walk to the room in question. Because your home office is where you create your income, the utmost of care must be taken when it's moved to your new home, allowing a seamless transition from one location to another. What sort of attention needs to be paid to this part of the moving process?
Internet Access and File Backups
Your home office is heavily dependent on the internet, so be sure to talk to your internet service provider to make sure that the internet will be connected at your new home on the day of your arrival (if not before). In case there is a service disruption, you might wish to backup certain crucial files that may not be available offline (such as if you used a cloud-based storage system). Don't forget to inform your clients of your new physical address too, and the date from which that new address becomes valid.
Computers and Electronic Devices
Before you get down to the nitty-gritty of packing up your home office, you need to be sure that critical components can be quickly reassembled at the other end. If you use a desktop PC or other electronic equipment, take a photo of the connected cables before you disconnect them. This creates a visual guide for quick reconnection. Be sure that you have ample protective packing supplies (such as bubble wrap) for these fragile and essential items.
Your Home Office Furniture
The furniture in your home office doesn't require any special considerations, and your chosen removalists will transport these items with the utmost of care (along with all your other possessions). A filing cabinet is another matter. Can it be transported with its contents still inside? Any decent furniture removalist will have a dolly cart for ease of transport, but there might be some weight concerns. If the filing cabinet needs to be emptied, think about whether data protection is necessary. When the contents of the cabinet are sensitive, you can either take these specific items with you in your own vehicle, or you can transfer them to a lockbox.
Moving to a new home is rarely as easy as you might think, but when you're moving your business at the same time, you need to be sure that any downtime is kept to an absolute minimum.
